Life: Tarantino Style and a Surprise Winter Storm

Life has been overwhelmingly busy lately. I feel like I haven't had a chance to catch up on anything. So, I'm making the executive blog author decision to just write about life backwards. We're starting at the most recent and working our way back to Christmas!

This week was wild. Tuesday started like any other normal Tuesday. It was cold, but no one was saying much about snow. I walked into work and had the normal conversation with Joe, my best friend for life. 'Hey Joe, I've got to run in to town during lunch because I'm out of gas.' A little after 9:30 am, we looked out and it was just starting to snow. By 10:00, there was a soft, white layer on all the cars. At 10:15, Joe said, 'Taylor, look at that car.' There was a car trying to make it up the hill by our office, tires spinning. At 10:20, my boss ran out of a client meeting and said, 'Do you see that car? Taylor, go get London right now.' I immediately ran out and called Kurt. He informed me that school had just emailed that they were closing in an hour, so I told him I'd grab his boys and meet him at the bottom of the hill since our hill was freezing over fast. I got the kids, drove down one hill, which had me right back at our office and that was all she wrote. It was 10:40 am. Every where you looked was nothing but a huge sheet of ice. Tires were spinning on every car and we all found ourselves playing a massive game of ice skating bumper cars.

I had 3 very sweet storm troopers, an empty gas tank, and a pretty helpless situation on my hands. After  about an 1.5 hours, we finally gave up, parked, and decided to at least try to get off the mountain. I had my purse and computer in one hand, and Lucas in the other. The mountain was frozen solid, so I told Knox and London to follow right behind me and to step in my snow tracks. That way if they fell down, they would slide into me.
A bit into our trek, London said, "Momma, a woman wants to hold my hand." I turned around and there was our new friend, Heather. A kid in each hand. She said I looked like I could use some help and help she did. She stayed with us for the rest of the day, helping out, entertaining kids, being an angel. I saved her in my phone as Angel Heather because that's exactly what she was to us on Tuesday. She was miracle number 1.
We made it to the fast food restaurant at the bottom of our hill and waited for most of the afternoon. Kurt was on his way to us but the calls kept getting less optimistic. One hour away, turned into two, and three,  and 'I'm not sure I'll be able to make it.' Angel Heather decided to risk it to see if she could get her car down the hill. She did. I left the kids with her and sprinted up the hill, praying the whole way. Miraculously, I made it down too. Miracle 2. We dished out big squeezes and we were all on our way! I drove immediately to a gas station and had to ice pick my gas tank open! I filled up and we slowly drove along. I opted for the interstate, knowing the traffic would at least have heated the roads up a bit. Our route calls for two interstates south. We never even hit a slow down on our way home, even thought it was slow going. Both interstates inbound were zero movement parking lots. Miracle number 3. We slide down my exit ramp and made it safely to our house. Miracle number 4.

We touched base with Jill and Kurt... Kurt still hadn't moved much and was losing phone battery. Jill would be staying at the high school because no form of transportation could get to them. We called Heather. In the little over the hour it took us to drive home, she had only made it about 1/4 mile. I called to check on her the last time at 10 pm and she still hadn't made it home.

After I checked in, and promised parents (the kids and mine both) that we were safe and not going anywhere, I suited the kids up and let them enjoy the glorious, terrifying snow!

 Safe. Sound. Cold and happy.
 Snow Dancing.

 Defrosting.
Kurt finally made it to his house at 10 pm. Jill spent the night with 4,000 high school kids.... with no heat, no pillows, no blankets. Her stories are horrible. They were freezing. There were 40 kids stuck at London's school. I've never had such a brimming heart for teachers. They are so full of sacrificial love and compassion. Jill told me how she literally rocked on the floor holding a child with a mental condition until he could gain composure over the fact that his mom couldn't get to him. She didn't shut her eyes for the entire night. All of these teachers are heros.

We were able to face time with Jill the next morning. Her boys were holding the phone when it connected and the first thing out of her mouth was, 'Oh, I think I'm going to cry now!' My heart broke in half knowing my best friend had spent the last 24 hours with her strong, supportive face on, but the sight of her beloved children broke the need to be anything but 'momma'. We assured her the boys were okay and she filled us in that there was still no way to reach the school. She was in for the long haul. Kurt couldn't stay away, so he made it to our house by mid morning and was able to inch his way home safely.

Once we had a chance to decompress a bit, we were able to switch into fun mode. We 'ice skated' up and down the driveway and then collected a bucket of snow to make snow ice cream.

Snow cream gets London (and Momma's) total seal of approval! It was delicious!
 Cheers to snow cream!

Abrupt segue to the news: Many more times that not, I am happy that we don't have cable. The news I hear is usually good news, not bad. I really like being guarded from the bad at times. Fox News released a great article about the owner of Chik-Fil-A on Hwy 280. He shut his restaurant down 'for business' during the storm, then he and his employees spent the night cooking and delivering free food to all the people stuck in their stretch of the road. They turned the restaurant into a shelter that night, then woke bright and early to cook chicken biscuits for anyone who needed food. The only thing they closed were their cash registers. The report says many people tried to pay them for food, because why would you not capitalize on the situation, but the owner and workers said that it was a blessing to help people.  I love my place. I'm so proud of her people.

With an unknown amount of 'locked in' time ahead of us, I decided I could finally conquer taking down the Christmas decorations! Yes. It's almost February, but I have no issue keeping Christmas up so long! (Long live the Christmas season!!)

You'll see in later posts (but earlier, since we're working in reverse!!) that I gifted myself a turn table with my Christmas money! It's the greatest thing ever! My sweet people have been watching for good deals on classic records, so we spent our snow day with the best of the soul sisters! Something about listening to these women wail makes the world feel like it's right on it's axis. Their heartbroken songs are somehow stress relieving.

Cabin Fever set in with us wrapping christmas lights around.... well, almost anything London wanted to wrap in lights. I also was serenaded with a song entitled 'Cinderella's Baking Soda.' A late afternoon grocery run did us both a world of good!
I dropped London off at Jill's house this morning so I could get a little work done today. Everything was fine, but I was in a bit of a funk. I knew I had a boat load of work waiting on me. The roads were still really icy in places. I was just funky. I was pulling out of the driveway and saw this smiling snow man sitting on the edge of the road. I laughed at how happy he looked and then recognized how it only takes a little of a good thing to help make a major attitude adjustment. I said a heart felt thanks for being able to have my hands on my child during this whole fiasco and promised to be a 'smiling snow man' to the people I met today.
Even in the storm, there's always hope for a better tomorrow. Thanks Mr. Snowman.

3rd Annual Pictures with Santa

We opted for pictures with Santa (at Bass Pro Shop: the redneck capital of the world) immediately following Thanksgiving so we could avoid the Christmas chaos. I'm so glad we went when we did! There was no line, no stress, and tons of fun!

Let no man say that any location has a better Santa set up than Bass Pro. It. Is. Awesome. There is so much to do and Santa looks about as Santa-y as any Santa I've ever seen! :)

Carousel rides!

Old Saint Nicholas! Good looking fella, eh??
I don't remember what the twins asked Santa for, but London asked for a barbie and barbie house. Santa listened well and Lu was THRILLED for her Christmas morning deliveries! Well done, Santa!

Focused in. Such serious business.

Rooooooaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrr!

There was lots of running, jumping, dancing and squealing! This was the best of all of my pictures but that's okay! I'll take terrible pictures if it means too much fun was being had to stop and properly pose!
This family tradition is always so much fun! I sure am thankful for my best friend sister-in-law that humors my need to haul us all over God's creation for the sake of a good time! She is such a good sport and I love her to death!

A few nights later we met the Thomas' for the Hoover City Christmas tree lighting. These two pictures cracked me up! This was the perfect capture of how London and Knox can be SO FOUL with each other one second then adore each other the next!

London Low. Knox High. Just so you can be 'in the moment' with me, the attitude was because Knox was too close to her red ball. Obviously.
Then literally 4 seconds later, BFF's again. They are something else!

This has nothing to do with Christmas but I'm sitting with London while she's watching TV and 'resting'... i.e. being the toothfairy. She just reached behind my pillow and gave me a 'penny'. She then explained that she was the tooth fairy, that I had not brushed my teeth this morning so my nasty tooth fell out and she stole it from me. We might need to work on explaining the tooth fairy in a bit more detail! :)

Thanksgiving 2013

See. Here's the problem. So much has happened between Thanksgiving and now that I really don't remember all the details that I needed to blog about over the Thanksgiving holiday! Im going to do my best to remember!
I do know this, London is in a super cuddly season. She likes to hug, kiss, and snuggle a lot, and Booper was sure to capitalize on the early morning sweet snuggle time! My two favorite girls ever! :) Looking at this is good for my heart!
London talking a blue streak to the new pony. :) I can't get over how cute he is!
 Home Sweet Home.
Another favorite picture recently. This place is paradise!
Sweet Baby Coco! Isn't she totally adorable? She is so happy and smiled the whole time she was awake! I got to snuggle up and love on this little ball of goodness and it was awesome! We made laps around the dining room table and I took in all that precious baby smell and squeezability! I was so happy to finally have a chance to meet this cute girl!
London and Hollis had a great time throwing leaves! Isn't Hollis handsome? I told Katie she could be a professional cute baby maker. For real.
I hope there are fireplaces in heaven. I have a fireplace but it doesn't work, so I LOVE coming to mom and dads and lighting a fire! However, I forgot you have to open the flue so I made the house good and smokey one night! :/ Whoops!
Thanksgiving evening visit with Uncle Barry, Aunt Doreen, and Din Din! I absolutely love seeing them all during Thanksgiving! It's our one chance per year and it's great just to soak them up for a bit!

Uncle Barry on flue duty when the damper unhinged and shut again! We were scheming how to get it open without burning our arms off!
Mom took early morning duty one morning so I could sleep in for a bit. London kept sneaking in to 'check on me' and eventually told Booper a grand fib that she was still tired. She came in and told me she wanted to go to sleep so I pulled her in close. Then she said, 'Can we talk while we sleep?"
... the next 20 minutes brought to you by darling 'sleep conversation'! :) She is a true by product of both of her parents!
She had been struggling with a runny nose at this point and the night before woke up sniffling. She said she needed a kleenex so I woke from the dead and told her I'd go get her one. I was walking out of the door and she screamed, 'YOU'RE MY BEST FRIEND, MOM!!!' Totally worth a 2 am kleenex run!

COLD 4 wheleer riding! I'm thankful my Dad is outrageously cold natured because he has all these fur lined jackets that would only normally make sense if you lived in Alaska, but I sure do appreciate them for morning rides in the frigid temps!
Mom's beautiful dining room table! It was so pretty! She decorated the whole house for christmas the next week and totally out did herself! It was BEAUTIFUL! I loved everything she put together! She is so talented and always makes the house look lovely and fun! Great Job Moms!!!

It was a delightful holiday, restful, loving, and full of counting all my blessings. I'm thankful for amazing parents, their house that is a retreat for my soul, and a girl that lets me just sit and marvel over the wonder of her. This life is the best I thing I know. I am grateful.

Be Beautiful in 2014

I'm still catching up on my posts, but in the meantime, I had to share this one. I feel like this is good read for anyone, but especially you ladies… be beautiful. I love this so, so much. I am SO beautiful, thanks to my darling kid, wildly amazing friends, and most loving momma. :)

"Tish and I were walking together on the beach last week. She stopped to look out at the water so I did, too. She put her hand in mine, looked up at me and said, “Mom, am I pretty?”
Luckily, I’d been thinking about that word for a couple of decades, so I was ready.
I sat Tish down in the sand, took a deep breath, and dove in.
“I think you’re pretty, Tish. I think you are very, very pretty. But pretty is a weak word, because it means different things to everyone. You really don’t have much control over whether folks think you’re pretty or not. Spending a lot of time asking the world if you’re pretty – it’s just not a strong position to take. You will have to keep changing yourself for everyone you meet, and eventually you won’t know who you are. I know because I used to think pretty was really important, so I felt confused and weak a lot.
What I want you to be, Tish, is beautiful. Beautiful means “full of beauty.” Beautiful is not about the appearance of your outsides- beautiful is about what you’re made of. Beautiful women are women who spend time discovering what they love – what sings to them –what their idea of beauty on this Earth is. Then they make time each day to fill themselves up with that beauty. They know themselves well enough to know what they love, and they love themselves enough to fill up with a little of their particular kind of beauty each day.
That’s why we’re here today, honey. I was feeling a little empty this afternoon and so I brought you here to the beach to fill myself back up with beauty. This place is beauty to me. So I come here to fill up with the Gulf of Mexico. With the sound of the waves rolling in and the sight of the pelicans fishing and the feel of the cool sand on my feet. When I leave here I feel really beautiful. And I brought you with me because you are beauty to me, too, Tish. When you smile at me – I am beautiful .
Many of the things you see me do each day, honey – I do them to be beautiful.
It’s why I take out to spend with good friends.
It’s why I read and look at art and always have that music I love playing in the house.
It’s why I light candles in every room.
It’s why I watch you climbing those Banyan trees in the front yard.
It’s why I roll around on the floor with Theo and Meadow and why I’m always smelling the top of your head.
It’s why I drag you to sunset and to church every week.
I’m just filling up with beauty- because I want to be beautiful.
Tish, you will meet plenty of people in your life who are pretty but haven’t yet taken the time to be beautiful. They will have the right look for the times- but they will not glow. Beautiful women glow. When you are with a beautiful woman you will not so much notice her hair or skin or body or clothes – because you’ll be distracted by the way she makes you feel. She will be so full of beauty that you will feel some spill onto you. You’ll feel warm and safe and curious around her. Her eyes will twinkle a little and she’ll look at you really closely, Tish- because beautiful, wise women know that the quickest way to fill up with beauty is to soak in another human being. Other people are beauty, beauty, beauty. So you will notice that the most beautiful women take their time with other people. They are just filling up.
Women who are concerned with being pretty think about what they look like, but women who are concerned with being beautiful think about what they are looking at. They are taking it all in. They are taking in the whole beautiful world and making all that beauty theirs to give away to others.
Does that make any sense, baby?”
And Tish said, “I think so. It’s like, when you first wake up, mom. You look really, really bad. Your hair is messy and your face looks weird. But when you see me, your eyes get twinkly. Is that because you think I’m beauty?”
“Yes, baby. I’m filling up with you. Because I want to be beautiful.”"

McWane That Thang

There is something so fun about surprising your kid. I think it's fun to surprise anyone really. I love to be surprised! More on that during my bday post!

The Friday before Thanksgiving, I surprised Lu and checked her out of school early to go spend the afternoon at the McWane Science Center. You all know I love finding cool places to play here, but for 5 years and counting now, nothing beats the McWane Center. It doesn't matter if your a little kid or 30 year old kid, this place is a full out blast. I was expecting a crowd, but there was hardly anyone there so we got to take our sweet ole time at every station. It was relaxing, fun, full of giggles, and just a great way to spend some QT with my favorite person on earth.

Laying on the bed of nails.
Dancing in front of the color screen
More dancing. So cool, right?!
Optical illusion of a tiny kid in a big room. If you run to the other side of the room you look like a huge person in a tiny room. This is totally amazing and only got 1,000,000 squeals from London as we played Giant Mommy/Tiny Mommy and Giant Lu/Tiny Lu. So much fun!
Finding Nemo.
Catching simulated pebbles in her shadow. This blows my mind. It reads your shadow and the visuals either stack on top or manuver around your shadow. HOW DOES IT KNOW?!?!

A centrifuge of sprinkles. Also known as the best thing on earth to my 3 year old girl.

The hurricane wind simulator. You can see the miles per hour of the wind speed ticking up behind her to about 79 mph then it starts to come back down.

Such a sweet day with my little lady. Both of us learning and exploring together. My heaven on earth.
